Ken Follett’s magnificent historical epic begins as five interrelated families move through the momentous dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women’s suffrage.A thirteen-year-old Welsh boy enters a man’s world in the mining pits. . . . An American law student rejected in love finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson’s White House. . . . A housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy. . . . And two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution.
From the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty, Fall of Giants takes us into the inextricably entangled fates of five families—and into a century that we thought we knew, but that now will never seem the same again. . . .

Historical Fiction
This book has many characters that become family as their lives unfurl. The historical setting adds to the story. Great read!

Review
I just had a cursory recollection of my history class on WWI in HS, now I believe I know it well. It was a good book.

The book was great! I’ve read it twice and also the other two books in the trilogy.

Thank You!
I have not read much the past ten years for a multitude of reasons. Ken Follett has the talent, passion and energy which grabs & holds my attention cover to cover. Not only "interesting" but educational, his writings have opened my eyes on many levels and improved my vocabulary as well. He has rekindled my appetite to read and learn. So it is with deep respect and appreciation I say Thank You!

Mostly good
This book was a good read, kept me entertained for sure. Occasionally I would get bored with the history and politics involved but never with the characters. So, if you're a history buff or willing to do a little skimming, I would recommend this book for sure.

Best First Trilogy Ever
The best way to appreciate history in an interesting way and fun.

Great Historic Fiction
This book gives incredible view of the First World War from every possible angle. The characters are portrayed realistically and yet come to life each a hero in their own way. The only downfall of this book is that it could have been much shorter, the author drags on in conversations and events that aren't as integral to the story, and make the reader put the book down instead of continuing to turn pages. All in all, I highly recommend this book, but prepare to do some skimming now and then!

Spectacular
This is one of the better books I've read in a long time. Especially for it having varying stories that intertwine. Not usually into stories like this but Fall of Giants did it in a way that kept me wanting more. Great job Ken!

Nice Historical Fiction
Good mix of history and fictional characters and events. The author kept a good balance switching between the principal families over course of the narrative. Enjoyable read.

Great Author
I don’t consider myself an avid reader, but have really enjoyed this author. I read Ken Follet’s “The Pillars of the Earth”, and got hooked. He sets up his stories in an elegant and captivating way. Reading “Fall of Giants” was no different. Caputures you and draws you into the story with the introduction of the first character. Does a fantastic job of introducing the other key characters, and weaving things together. His development of individual story lines is great, but the way he weaves them together is masterful. Just finished “Fall of Giants”, and am immediately purchasing “Winter of the World”. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!!

Fine book, but...
Another great one from Follett. However, the iBook Store indicated an "update" for it, which only seemed to remove the cover image. Any way to get it back? Image is fine in Store, just not downloading with rest of book into my library.

FALL OF Giants
Good book, but a terrible ending. Maybe the author just got tired. All of a sudden, Poof...the end...bye, bye. Disappointing.

Great read!
Beyond the entertaining characters and their compelling personalities, this book provides an excellent context for understanding the events that shaped the course of the First World War. I look forward to reading the sequel!

Great and accurate!
Follet's writing and storytelling is tremendous. I have a degree in history with an emphasis on the World Wars. The events that took place outside of Follett's fictional characters are accurate! I loved this book.

Move along....
This is the first book in at least 10 years that I have stopped reading right smack at the beginning. I trudged along to page 200 and just couldn't bear it any longer. The story is thinly contrived, the historical facts are wildly manipulated and the characters are so lacking of any real substance, I found myself getting angry at the author for not only wasting my time but space on iBooks. If you happen to read this review....move along!
Ackkkkk
amazing!
I have NEVER reread a book. these two books in the century series warrant rereading. Follett sends us the message to remember history and brings it alive with his global perspective. I was guilty of now being aware of what. Europe went thru....... good read.

Page turner
What an excellent piece of work. I was pulled in from the first page. The author is masterful in spinning fiction with history. He made me feel like I was witnessing historical events through my minds eye. It is a must read.

Fantastic Book - brings WWI and that time period to life
Ken Follett might be the best at bringing history to life and making it interesting. Even if you consistently fell asleep in history classes, I am confident you will enjoy his books. After all, I doubt your history class involved sex! I found this book hard to put down, at times reading faster so I could get to the next page. Engrossing enough to cause some lost sleep a few times. Follett excels in building characters the reader can identify with, while telling a story that compels you to read on. The best part for me; I end up learning history better than I ever did in college. My one criticism is the sexual content. I don't mind it all, and it often makes the story more interesting. But on a few instances I feel Follett goes a little overboard and I find myself wondering at the accuracy for the times. It is a small criticism as these indulgences in no way distract from the story. It is apparent that Follett's research is superb; the way he is able to capture the historical timeline of each country, and more important, the polical and social feelings of the time. Very impressive. Overall I find all of his books engaging and captivating. The worst part for me; waiting for the third book in each of his trilogies! The anticipation is killing me!

Fall of GiantsI
I have read Mr. Follett’s prior books starting with “The Eye of the Needle” I have thoroughly enjoyed the earlier books of his, but his “Pillar of the Earth” Series brought him to higher ights, in my estimation. This new trilogy - I have read the “Winter of the World” and awaiting “Edge of Eternity” - is magnificent in its scope!! I was a little daunted at first when I saw the “cast of characters” reminiscent of “War and Peace”, but Mr. Follett has weaved his story in such a way that it was not difficult for me to “keep the characters” straight! Thank you for many hours of enjoyable, interesting and compelling reading. I can not wait to dig into the final book.

Reads like fiction but is an accurate historical account
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I'm moving right on to Winter Of the World.

Ken Follett does it again
Another astounding and riveting could be true story, entices the reader to do a little history work of their own. Put your self in the shoes and souls of these characters and you will want to study our recent past on your own. This book made me want to learn.

Interesting way to learn history
Novel about WWI through the experiences of the main characters. Much preferable to our dry history lessons in school. While I liked this book and plan to continue with book two in the trilogy, I liked the two medieval era books that were set in Kingsbridge Priory even better -- Pillars of the Earth and World Without End.

Brilliant...well researched!!!
I have always been skeptical about historical fiction, but Ken Follett takes each character and intimately molds them according to their culture's values, history, and anything else that touches their souls. He makes you feel both proud and shameful of them, but understanding. You get an awesome story and a vast history lesson at the same time!!!

Follett at his best
Amazing mingling of characters but done in such a way that it all melds together and you don't get lost. You feel like you are a witness to history and the lives of the characters. Superb reading

Fall of Giants
Highly engaging storyline.
Never do these things..
One of the best books I've ever read..
I consider myself to be a bit of a book worm (except in my case, I guess you could call me a "kindle" worm). I have books of all genres in my library, and continually add to it. I started this book a bit apprehensive of whether or not I would like it. I don't know considering I've never been disappointed with Ken Follett in the past. This book blew my expectations and apprehensiveness out of the water. The way the main characters are all intertwined and meld together is remarkable. I don't think many authors are able to bring full circle the stories of so many characters the way that Follett has. I found myself intrigued throughout the whole book, and considering it's length, I'd say that's a great accomplishment. I can't wait to read the next one!

Fall of Giants
I loved this epic story. Mr Follett creates real, fallible, deep characters. You can both love them and despise them. You will cheer for them and cry for them. I didn't want it to end!

Painful to get through
This book had been recommended to me by so many that I was really looking forward to it. I was very disappointed. It is a very long book that did not really need to be- too much detail - to the extent that I found myself skipping pages. The author did a good job developing only a few main characters- but it was inconsistent at best . I very nearly found myself putting it down altogether- a first for me.

Another Follett Winner
Once again Ken Follett has used history to recreate a marvelous story. I am glad that I waited to read this because now I can go straight into the sequel.

Fall of Giants
What a wonderful read . While I was initially daunted by the size I found that I could not put it down. The characters were well developed and I found the historical setting informative . I can't wait to read the next book to see what happens to the families.

Not What I'd Hoped For
Am I the only one who felt like I was plowing through a textbook when I read this? I do enjoy historical fiction and I'm a diehard fan of Follett, but it seems to me the I could've done with fewer historical details and more of a story. The plausibility factor of these characters encountering each other by "chance" across continents, wars, and general upheaval was a challenging, but obviously useful tool for constructing a cohesive story. I practically inhaled Pillars of the Earth with its unforgettable, very human characters. Wish I could say the same here.

Another Follett masterpiece
A fan of Ken Follett since I picked up Pillars of the Earth this book does not disappoint. I love how he educates the reader on historical happenings through his fictional characters. You always feel like you are in the moment he is describing. The interweaving of history with fiction is an amazing talent that this author has down perfectly. I learned so much about the story behind the start of WWI and I greatly look forward to the sequel due out this fall.

Fall of the Giants
I am a fan of Ken Follet. This is the third book I've read of his and each time I get enthralled. The conversations among his characters make me feel as if I am present in the scene as well.
